Why do retainers for braces cost so much?

Why are retainers so expensive

When orthodontic braces are removed your doctor provides you with a retainer to prevent your teeth from moving.  Some retainers are permanent and some retainers are removeable.

A permanent retainer often consists of a wire attached to the back side of your teeth.  This wire prevents your teeth from moving without any effort from you.  If you bite down on something hard you can break the bond or bend the wire. If your permanent retainer breaks, then your teeth can become crooked again in just a week or two.

If you wear a permanent wire retainer, immediately contact your orthodontist if you notice your teeth starting to move.  More than likely, the adhesive holding your teeth to the wire requires reattachment.

The cost to reattach your tooth to the wire depends on the agreement made with your doctor.  Most orthodontists will provide this service for a minimal fee because it can be done quickly in their office.  Do not wait to fix a broken permanent retainer.  A drifting tooth often causes other teeth in your mouth to move too.  Before long, you may need braces again to correct your smile.  And then the cost goes up exponentially.

Invisalign* retainers are an example of a removeable clear retainer.  Some removeable retainers are made with bright colors and wires that extend across your front teeth. Typically, your first set of removeable retainers is included in your treatment fee.  However, if you lose or break your retainer, your doctor will charge you a fee to replace it.

The price to replace a clear retainer is affected by the services provided by doctors. Often they will take a new impression.  The impression is used to create a 3D image of your teeth.  A lab technician uses this 3D image to make a custom retainer to replace your old retainer.  With all these services, your doctor will typically charge several hundred dollars for a new set of retainers.

At REATAIN™, we store 3D images of our customers’ teeth.  Once you enroll in our retainers for life program (RFL), you can get a new retainer for just $59 plus shipping.  And we deliver your clear retainers directly to your home, your work, or where ever life takes you. Simple, convenient and affordable.
