Can I whiten my teeth with a dental retainer?

IMG_3977_whitening

At first glance, a dental retainer looks like a custom whitening tray.  However, there are many differences in their design and use.  First and foremost, a dental retainer is designed for daily wear.  A whitening tray is only worn occasionally – while the shade of your teeth are brightened.

Whitening teeth has become a popular beauty enhancement for people of all ages.  Whitening trays used with bleaching gel can quickly lighten the shade of your teeth.  While most teeth can be whitened without a dentist, some stains require a dental expert.

Tobacco, curry, and colored liquids like coffee and wine can darken the shade of your teeth.  Over time, small particles of food and drink get trapped in the surface of your teeth.  Porcelain teeth and other dental restorations are typically not affected by staining or whitening like natural teeth. If your front teeth have been restored, then make sure to only whiten your natural teeth to the shade of your restored teeth.  Otherwise, the color of your front teeth will not match.

A custom whitening tray is specially designed in a lab to hold bleaching gel against the surface of your teeth.  Small pockets, or voids in the tray allow bleaching gel to pool up on the front of your teeth during each whitening treatment.  If a dental retainer is used instead of a whitening tray, the bleaching gel will get pushed out of the retainer and into your mouth.

Clear retainers are made with a highly durable plastic that is translucent.  Designed for daily wear, clear retainers fit tightly to the surface of each tooth. Alternatively, whitening trays are made from a softer material than dental retainers.  Whitening trays are not designed for daily wear and do not provide adequate strength to hold teeth in place like a retainer.  Although, they look similar, dental retainers look and act differently than whitening trays.

REATAIN™ can provide whitening trays to customers that enroll in our retainers for life program (RFL).  Once enrolled in RFL, a clear retainer is $59 and a custom whitening tray is just $99 plus shipping.  Bleaching gel sold separately
